12 MARKS OF A QUALIFIED WORSHIP LEADER

by Guest Blogger

It's that time of year again.

This is the time of year when we announce that we're looking for people to join our established group of artists who lead the church here at Emmanuel in music for a full year!  It's an honor, a privilege and a WHOLE LOT 'O FUN!  We will host auditions on July 7 & 8 in the evenings here at ECC.  Sign ups are at the Event Center starting this weekend.

Obviously, we are looking for people who are gifted, committed and called to music ministry.  But there are other qualifications that we are looking for too.  We don’t always think of it this way, but according to this list (I grabbed from a another church's blog) worship leaders should have the same qualifications that the bible gives in the New Testament for pastors and elders.  It’s a high standard, but one that we need to hold to as leaders.

Here’s the whole list:

Above Reproach (1 Timothy 3:2)

an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach...

Husband of One Wife or Wife of One Husband (Titus 1:8)

...hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined.

Sober-Minded or Disciplined (1 Timothy 3:2 & Titus 1:8)
Respectable, Well Thought of by Outsiders, Not a New Believer (1 Timothy 3:6-7)

...not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil.  Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil.

Hospitable (1 Timothy 3:2 & Titus 1:8)
Able to Teach (Titus 1:9)

He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.

Not Controlled by Alchohol (1 Timothy 3:3)

...not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.

Not Violent but Gentle, Not Quick-Tempered (Titus 1:7)

For an overseer, as God’s steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain

Not Arrogant or Conceited (1 Timothy 3:6 & Titus 1:7)
Not a Lover of Money (1 Timothy 3:3 & Titus 1:7)
Good Husband/Father or Wife/Mother(1 Timothy 3:4-5)

He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God’s church?

Lover of Good, Upright and Holy (Titus 1:8)

What do you think?

It's a high standard, but I can say that God has already brought a group of people who meet these qualifications to the church.  We are all flawed and sinful people in need of grace and by his grace, we'll be able to do ministry with a whole new group of people in this year!
