Be A Kid

by Guest Blogger

This is a piece I wrote to be used in our services this past weekend.  It’s coming out of the Emmanuel Theatre Co’s focus on the spoken word form of theatre this season.  We had two different people perform it and each brought a different flavor to it…their own personal style.  It was a good first start…

Kids.

I’m a kid.

You’re a kid.  We’re all someone’s kid, right?  So embrace it.  Be a kid.

And kids are the most amazing things…

Kids praise, dancing in circles, not caring who sees them.

Kids listen and believe, trusting what you tell them.

Kids are a reward, a gift and simply want to be…

with you,

next to you,

under you,

on top of you.

Kids come and climb onto your lap assuming you’d want them to be there

as much they want to sit there.

Kids are creatures of the light.  Inherently afraid of the dark, they want to have sight.  So they flip on the lights even when you’re trying to save…electricity.

So be a kid.

But it’s not always easy.  When you are tired and can’t even dream..all the world seems scary…

When you try to do right and the ensuing fight makes you feel like the little kid on the playground…

When you want to trust, but the world goes busting to tackle you into the concrete making knees bloody and noses snotty.

When your family doesn’t look like the Cleavers.

When someone lies to your face and you don’t believe her.

Be. a. kid.

Think about it.  The crazy love Father God has poured on us.  He calls us children of God.  It’s true.  For you.  And you.  And you.  We are his beloved children.

Before you were lost in darkness.

Before you were beat, bloody, booger-faced.

Before you were no-bodies wanted by no-one.

But now, now you are light in the Lord.  Be children of the light.

Be a kid.

So let all the kids come to me; do not get in their way, just let them be.  For the kingdom of heaven belongs to kids like you and me…

Be a kid.
