HE IS WORTHY, WE ARE NEEDY

by Mark Vincenti

Author and Pastor Daniel Henderson teaches a simple prayer method containing two movements: He is worthy, We are needy.

1) He is worthy:
In this prayer method, we begin by reading a Scripture that helps us focus on God’s character and works.
For example, Psalm 63:3, 4, & 7 says, "Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands… Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings."
Then in response to the Scripture we take time to praise and worship God.

If you are praying with others, it can be helpful to use a fill in the blank prayer such as:
“God, you are worthy of worship today because ______________.”
Or “God, we praise you today because ________________.”
Using the short sentence and fill in the blank is a great way for families to pray together because people of all ages can participate by filling in the blank with something they admire about the Lord.

2) We are needy:
Once we have lifted our eyes to God in praise and worship, we can then lift our requests to the Lord.
Philippians 4:6-7 says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”

So, what do we pray for specifically?

The following list for prayer was written by Dr. Walter Kim, president of the National Association of Evangelicals of which our denomination is a part. We posted this list on the Facebook page yesterday but include it here in case you missed it. Use this list to help you target specific things as you pray. Of course, you can add your own requests to the list as well.

Pray:
- for God’s love to be the foundation of our hope.
- for God's mercy in stopping the spread of this virus.
- for God’s healing of those who are sick throughout the world.
- for God’s strength for medical personnel serving tirelessly.
- for God’s insight to be given to researchers seeking solutions.
- for God’s wisdom to guide civic leaders and health officials.
- for God’s peace to guard us from fear or anxiety.
- for God’s provision for those whose livelihoods and income have been affected by this crisis.
- for God’s creativity to make us agents of love and compassion.
- for God’s Spirit to draw people to the saving power of Jesus.
